The Dilemma - Alan Dreezer’s ‘Butterfly’
Last year, we wrote about Alan Dreezer’s second album ‘H E A L E D’, who in his own words described the record to us as being about ‘exploring difficult subjects but from a position of strength. Because there is distance and a different perspective once you have healed.’ Alan’s emotional connection with his music continues in his latest single, ‘Butterfly’, with this article featuring exclusive commentary from Alan on the origins of the track.
Since writing about ‘H E A L E D’ in October 2021, one of the album’s singles, ‘The Chase’ was included on a physical compilation entitled ‘Electropop 21’, a series from Conzoom Records. More recently, Alan Dreezer has continued to work with his collaborators who helped to realise his previous work, culminating in his forthcoming third album, ‘NOTHING CHANGES IF NOTHING CHANGES’.
As with all of his music, Alan continues to support his chosen charity, the Love Button Global Movement, which helps to spread love and kindness around the world. The first single taken from this album is called ‘Butterfly’.
‘I just want you to notice me,’ Alan pleads at the start of ‘Butterfly’. He’s soon joined by a punchy set of drums and atmospheric synths, creating a blend of pop and soul that elevates with a funky edge during the song’s infectious chorus. This fusion of genres flow seamlessly, connected together by Alan Dreezer’s words and smooth vocal delivery, with a wall of backing vocals in the song’s pre-fade. Dreezer explains the concept of his lyric, and the musical inspirations for Butterfly:
‘The song is about infatuation and the object of your desire being unaware of how you feel about them. I think we have all felt like that about someone at some point and the dilemma you face when you're in that situation. Do you let them know how you feel? Will it spoil any relationship you may already have? It's those questions I wanted to explore in this song. Musical references were MJ, Prince, Chic classic disco stuff but hopefully with a modern twist too with people like Dua Lipa and Harry Styles certainly an influence recently.’
For this song, Alan worked with his collaborator Elliot Richardson, who previously worked on his singles ‘Any Way I Can’, ‘The Twelfth Of Never’ and ‘Time Stand Still’. Richardson co-writes and produces ‘Butterfly’, filling the track with a myriad of sonic goodies that flutter around the listener, especially in the song’s verses.
Alan recently held a competition to choose the single artwork for ‘Butterfly’, with the final image winning 47.2% of the vote in an online poll against two other designs. Elliot Richardson also directs the music video, assisted by Warren Woodcraft, whose previous work with Dreezer includes the reality-bending video for ‘The Chase’.
‘Butterfly’ is taken from Alan Dreezer’s forthcoming album, ‘NOTHING CHANGES IF NOTHING CHANGES’. With two solo albums already under his belt, Alan explains more about his philosophy in making his third album, and what fans have to look forward to:
“Everything we are doing within this project is asking the question of ourselves ‘Have we done this before? If the answer is yes then we won't use it.’ Even the real details like the aspect ratio of the video to the colours worn and used in the video are all a complete change. All of the sounds on the track are sounds and instruments we've never used before. It is taking me out of my comfort zone but I'm really enjoying the challenges it's presenting to us. And I'm also trying to have a bit more fun this time around both within the writing and performance.”
